SWCC plans more desal plants

11 April 2003
The Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) has unveiled plans to build five small-scale desalination plants aimed at supplying water to remote areas along the Red Sea coast. A tender to provide consultancy services on the scheme was issued in early April. The projects will complement plans by SWCC and Saudi Electricity Company (SEC)to carry out four independent water and power projects (IWPPs).

The five desalination plants will have capacities ranging between 1 million and 5 million gallons a day (g/d) and will not entail any power generating elements. The plants will be located in or near the towns of Al-Wajh, Rabigh, Al-Qunfudah and Al-Laith, with the remaining plant to be built on the southwest island of Farasan.

Bids from engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors are expected to be invited later this year.

SWCC and Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) are also studying plans for three 2,000-MW IWPPs and a 700-MW plant in Shuqaiq, which is expected to be tendered later this year (MEED 21:2:03).
