Switzerland-based ABB has won a $120m contract to supply three substation to Saudi Arabia’s first university for women.

ABB will design, supply, install and commission one 380/132kV substation and two 132/13.8kV substations to Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University in Riyadh.

Saudi Electricity Company is the client.

The substations will use gas insulated switchgear technology to reduce their size and allow ABB to install them at the campus.

The company is due to complete work on the project in 2011.

The university is a $5bn project that will accommodate 40,000 students. The campus will have several energy-saving features, including 40,000 square metres of solar panelling. This will provide up to 18 per cent of the energy needed for air-conditioning.
