Syria launches private wind farm project

03 December 2009

Developers to submit prequalifications by the end of January 2010

Syria’s Public Establishment of Electricity for Transmission & Generation (PEEGT) has invited developers to prequalify to build the country’s first wind farm. It will also be the country’s second independent power project.

The power utility will hold a project clarification meeting on 13 December and the deadline for the submission of prequalification documents is 25 January 2010.

The farm will have capacity of 50-100MW and will be located at either Al-Sukhna, 70 kilometres east of Palmyra or Al-Hijana, 50km south of Damascus or at both sites.

The winning bidder will develop the wind farm on a build-own-operate or build-operate-transfer basis. The project company will design, finance, build, own and operate the farm for 20-25 years.

PEEGT will shortlist companies before inviting them to submit a letter of intent to bid. The companies will then carry out wind measurements at the site for 12 months. The client will issue the request for proposals three months before the end of the wind measurement period.

The company plans to announce two more wind farm projects in 2009, with capacity of 30MW and 100MW. These will be built on an engineering, procurement and construction basis, however.

Syria has total installed capacity of 7,800MW of power and demand is growing at 7-8 per cent a year. The country aims to install 2,500MW of wind power and more than 3,000MW of solar power plants by 2030.
