Taqa partners with Theolia for Moroccan wind farm

15 June 2008
Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa) and France’s Theolia have signed a strategic partnership to develop renewable energy in Morocco.

Following the agreement, the partners will bid to construct and operate a 300MW wind farm in Tarfaya, Morocco.

"This marks our first step into renewable energy," says Peter Barker-Homek, chief executive officer of Taqa.

Taqa and Theolia have also agreed an equal partnership in Compagnie Eolienne du Detroit (CED), to study wind farm sites in Morocco including the Abdelkhalek Torres wind farm.

“Our strategy is to diversify across the energy value chain in different territories and, by joining forces with Theolia in CED, we feel that we are in a good position to bid for the new wind farm capacity," says Barker-Homek.

Taqa already owns and operates a 1,356MW thermal power station in Morocco, providing about half the annual electricity production in the kingdom. Theolia has a 50MW wind farm in the country.
