Tarmac Alawi wins airbase work

17 January 2003
The UK/local Tarmac Alawiwas awarded in early January the contract for the construction of a military airbase at Al-Masanah, located near Sohar, for the Royal Omani Air Force (RAOF). The design and build contract calls for the development of heliport facilities and associated barrack and civil infrastructure to accommodate between 10,000 and 15,000 servicemen (MEED 5:7:02; 24:5:02).

The UK's Scott Wilson Kirkpatrickhas drawn up the initial designs for the base, which was originally intended to incorporate a 4.6-kilometre-long runway capable of handling heavy-lift fixed-wing aircraft. Total project costs are estimated at $60 million.

The Defence Ministry is also understood to be looking at proposals to build two further airbases in the sultanate for the RAOF, which has to vacate its existing headquarters at Seeb International Airport (Construction, MEED Special Report, 5:7:02, page 25).
