Seven companies are preparing to bid by 6 October for the main engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract on the project to expand generating capacity at Aluminium Bahrain (Alba). The new capacity will supply power to Alba's fifth potline which is to be built by US-based Bechtelunder an EPC management contract awarded in July (MEED 26:7:02, Industry).
The EPC package calls for the installation of about 650 MW of new capacity, and is due for completion in spring 2005, in time for the commissioning of the new potline. A contract award is expected in November. Alba's existing power capacity stands at about 1,500 MW.
A second contract is also to be tendered to enhance power capacity at the plant. It will involve the upgrade of existing power systems, and is expected to be tendered by the fourth quarter. The consultant for both contracts is the UK's Mott MacDonald.
