Tender out for power plant

International companies have been invited to bid for a 1,200-MW combined cycle power plant at Hadjeret Ennous. Bids are due by the end of January. The client is Algeria Electricity Company (AEC).

Two parallel tenders have been launched: one for an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor; the other to form a project company with AEC, Sonatrach and Sonelgazto build, own and operate the plant. The selected bidder will begin work in 2004 and completion of the facility is scheduled for 2008.

Algiers is undertaking a number of power projects to increase generating capacity to meet rapidly rising demand. In August, France's Alstomwon a Eur 123 million ($137 million) contract to build a 300-MW plant in F'Kirina (MEED 22:8:03). The Hadjeret Ennous plan has been on the drawing board since the late 1990s.
