Tender out for RO expansion

The Ministry of Electricity & Water (MEW) has invited five contractors to bid by early November to expand the Ras Abu Jarjur reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant. They are Germany's Preussag, France's Degremont, Ionicsof the US, Saudi Arabia's Al-Kawther Industries, and Japan's Sasakura Engineering Company.

The scope of works involves adding 7 million gallons a day (g/d) to the plant's existing nameplate capacity of 10 million g/d. The plant - built by Sasakura in the early 1980s - has boosted its output over the last six months to a maximum of 12 million g/d of water in order to meet rising local demand.
