Dubais Roads and Transport Authority starts tram network tests ahead of November opening
The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has begun tests on its new tram network in the Al-Sufouh area of the emirate.
Tests were conducted on a stretch of track running from the main tram building behind Dubai Police College to Al-Sufouh Road, close to Knowledge Village. It is due to be operational by November 2014.
The $1.1bn main contract for the tram was awarded to Frances Alstom and the local/Belgian Belhasa Six Construct in 2008.
In June 2010, work was halted due to financing issues, with it beginning again in January 2011. In 2012, a consortium led by Alstom won a 13-year, $231m maintenance contract for the tram projects first phase and in September 2013, the UKs Serco won a $17.9m contract to operate it.
