Three in for City Centre

11 November 2005
Technical and commercial bids were submitted on 7 November for the main construction contract on the Bahrain City Centre mall project. An award is expected to take some time as the prices are understood to have come in over the BD 130 million-140 million ($342.1 million-368.4 million) budget of the client, Dubai-based Majid al-Futtaim Investments.

Three groups submitted offers - the local AA Nass Contracting with South Africa's Murray & Roberts Contractors (Middle East), the local Cebarco with Australia's Multiplex Construction and Malaysia's WCT, the local Chapo with India's Larsen & Toubro. One other prospective bidding group, the team of Cyprus-based GP Zachariades (GPZ - Overseas) and Saudi Arabia's El-Seif Engineering Contracting Establishment, declined to bid.

The contract covers a three-storey mall with a total built-up area of 435,000 square metres and two 17-storey hotels, located in the Seef district of Manama. Also included in the development will be a water park and multiplex cinema. Completion is due by the end of 2007.

The UK's Mace International is the project manager; Mott MacDonald, also of the UK, is the lead consultant (MEED 21:10:05).
