Three more power plants go out for tender

12 September 2003
Saudi Electricity Company (SEC)has issued tender documents for three more power plant expansion projects. The latest - covering the addition of new capacity at Riyadh's PP7 and the Arar and Rafah stations - brings to six the number of power station expansions issued for bid by SEC since the beginning of September (MEED 5:9:03).

The PP7 expansion is the largest new tender, calling for the supply and installation of two gas turbines with generating capacity of at least 55 MW. SEC has also re-released tender documents for the expansion of the stations at Arar and Rafah. According to the tender specifications, the successful bidder for the Arar project will install four 25-MW or two 50-MW gas turbines. The Rafah scheme calls for the installation of two 25-30-MW turbines. The bid closing date for the PP7 tender is 11 November; for both Arar and Rafah it is 1 November.

Bids are to be submitted in the second half of October for three other expansion projects, at the Asir, Bisha and Jizan power stations in the south. At Asir, companies will be required to add one gas turbine with capacity of 50-60 MW, while the successful bidder for Bisha will add two 50-60-MW gas turbines. Jizan power station will see the installation of three 50-60-MW gas turbines. Bidders can bid for one or more of the contracts and are required to include the option to install an additional turbine at each power plant in the proposals. The three power projects are to be carried out within 20 months.
