Tourism project to seek investors

Tunisia’s Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts Selma Elloumi Rekik has announced that a cable car for tourists in the town of Zaghouan will be tendered on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis.

Zaghouan is situated below Roman ruins known as the Temple of Waters and an aqueduct.

The Tourism Real Estate Agency (Trea) has acquired an 80,000-square-metre site next to the mountain road, according to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse.

The tourism ministry and Trea are also preparing to tender a contract to develop and operate a 710,000-sq-m ecotourism centre on the island of Kerkennah.

However, the tourism industry in the country has suffered from a series of terrorist attacks in 2015.

Tunisia passed new PPP legislation in late 2015, which altered risk allocation. It intends to set up a PPP unit to tender the projects and clarify which schemes are in the pipeline.

Previous PPP projects include the $500m Enfidha airport near Sousse and the $260m Rades II independent power project (IPP). However, other IPPs and PPP schemes have faltered, such as a deepwater port at Enfidha.

Reforms in 2008 did not lead to any successful PPP projects.
