A joint venture of Sweden's ABB-ABS with the local Limak has been awarded a contract valued at about $15 million for the construction of the Kurfalli pumping stations as part of the $270 million Yesilcay water supply project for Istanbul (MEED 4:4:97).

The client State Hydraulic Works (DSI) now awaits approval from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, which is part-financing the Yesilcay project, before signing the contract.

The contract at Kurfalli near Agva to the northeast of Istanbul on the Black Sea coast mainly calls for the construction of a pumping station with a capacity of 14.3 cubic metres per second. The contract also specifies the laying of 2,750 metres of steel pipe, and 49,563 metres of pre-stressed steel concrete pipes.

The DSI plans to invite bids in September for the last contract of the Yesilcay project, the laying of 64 kilometres of both steel and concrete cylinder pipes at a cost of about $120 million. On completion by the end of 1999, the Yesilcay project will supply about 145 million cubic metres of water a year to the city (MEED Special Report Water, 26:1:96).

The DSI also plans to invite bids soon for the construction of a $10 million water supply pipeline at Corum, northeast of Ankara.
