The State Hydraulic Works (DSI) has awarded a contract worth about $34 million to a venture of France's Degremont with the local Mapa for the construction of the Yeni Emirli water treatment plant. The contract is part of the Yesilcay water supply programme for Istanbul (Water, MEED Special Report, 29:11:96; 26:1:96, page 12).

Work is expected to start in June, with completion in about two years. The plant will have a processing capacity of about 600,000 cubic metres a day from its aeration, filtration, clarification and disinfection units.

The DSI also expects to award a contract by mid-June for another part of the Yesilcay programme, the Kurfalli pumping station. Eight ventures have been shortlisted to bid for the $30 million contract (MEED 4:4:97).

The Yesilcay project will supply about 145 million cubic metres a year to Istanbul, and is financed by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development.
