TURKEY: Locals bid low for earthquake rehab

Local companies have bid low for more work to reconstruct and rehabilitate buildings and infrastructure damaged by the earthquake in the east of Erzincan province in March 1992. Intes and Alsim-Alarko lead the shortlists for the reconstruction of hospitals.

Intes is low bidder, at TL 136,257 million ($9.7 million), for the reconstruction and re-equipping of a social security hospital together with a nurses' residence, and a bid of TL 147,854 million ($10.5 million) for the reconstruction of a military hospital together with a nurses' residence. The low bidder to reconstruct a state hospital and nurses' residence is Alsim-Alarko, at TL 169,582 million ($12.1 million).

Bids are expected soon for contracts covering a provincial public education administrative building, a rural affairs provincial administrative building, municipality workshops, a provincial prison, and a stadium and sports facilities. Other infrastructure contracts expected to be awarded in 1994 include ones for a waste water treatment plant and a refuse storage area, and also sewerage and rain water drainage construction.

The reconstruction and rehabilitation works are supported by a $285 million loan from the World Bank.
