The US' GE Industrial & Power Systems has a $22 million contract from the local steel making company Colakoglu Metalurji to supply a 123-MW gas turbine and air-cooled generator. The new power plant will end the steel mill's reliance on electricity from the main grid.
The simple-cycle power generation equipment will be installed at the Diliskelesi steel mill in Gebze, one of the largest private steel mills in the country. GE will supply the turbine and generator, as well as providing technical assistance. The construction and civil works are being carried out by Colakoglu. The plant will start up in August this year.
Colakoglu Metalurji, part of the Colakoglu Industries group, plans to convert the power plant to a combined-cycle configuration in 1995.
