Turkish embassy in Baghdad bombed

15 October 2003
A car bomb exploded on 14 October some 500 metres from Turkey's embassy killing at least one person and injuring many more. The dead man is thought to be a security guard who worked at the embassy. It is thought that the explosion was caused by a suicide bomber. Ankara condemned the bombing and a Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman said the incident 'underscores the necessity for everybody to take immediate action to contribute to establishing stability in the country' (MEED 13:10:03).

Turkey agreed on 7 October to send troops to Iraq to help in peacekeeping efforts. The Iraqi interim governing council has clearly stated that having Turkish troops in the country would prove unhelpful due to differing agendas.
