Turks awarded pump station work

The Great Man-made River Authority (GMRA) has awarded Turkey's Metokthe pump station and associated utilities package for the Abu Zayan coastal irrigation project. The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract covers installation of two units that will pump water from the Abu Zayan collection reservoir to Tripoli.

Four other companies bid for the contract. The value of the deal has not been disclosed. The award follows GMRA's selection in December of Turkey's STFAfor the contract to build the 300,000-cubic-metre Abu Zayan reservoir (MEED 11:1:02, Power & Water).

The local Al-Nahr Companyhas the contract to supply and install the project's 200-kilometre pipeline and Germany's Siemenswill carry out electrical works. The Jefara Water System Utilisation Authority will operate the system, which will be fed water from the Hasouna-Jefara section of the great man-made river. Total project costs are estimated at about $300 million (MEED 14:12:01, Cover Story).
