Turks sign water pipeline contract for Eastern Province

03 March 2008

A local/Turkish joint venture has signed a SR1.4bn ($375m) contract to build a major water pipeline as part of the scheme to develop a new water transmission network in the Eastern Province.

A team of Yuksel Holding and Yuksel Insaat, both of Turkey, and Riyadh-based Yuksel Saudia Company will carry out the engineering, procurement and construction contract.

The 134-kilometre-long, 110 million gallon-a-day (g/d) pipeline will carry water from the planned independent water and power project at Jubail to Dammam, Al-Khobar, Jubail, Ras Tanura and Safwa. Due for completion in 2010, the plant will produce 2,745MW of electricity and 176 million g/d of water.

The contract also covers the upgrade of the existing Hofuf water transmission system, which supplies Abqaiq and Hofuf with water from the Al-Khobar desalination plant. The project is due to be completed in 29 months.

Saline Water Conversion Corporation is the client. The local Group Five Pipe Saudi will supply the pipes (MEED 6:7:07).
