Two bid for Aramco IPPs

04 July 2003
Two groups of companies submitted bids to Saudi Aramcoby the 30 June deadline to carry out four independent power projects (IPPs) on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis. Up to four consortia had expressed serious interest earlier this year in participating in the programme (MEED 23:5:03).

The bidders for the project, which calls for the installation of about 800 MW of generating capacity, are: the UK's International Power(IP), with the local Saudi Ogerand Japan's Mitsui & Company; and Japan's Mitsubishi Corporation, with Korea Electric Power Company (Kepco). Nine groups of companies were originally prequalified to bid for the project.

Aramco's IPP programme calls for the construction of power plants at Ras Tanura, Juaymah, Uthmaniyah and Shedgum. The proposed plants will range in size from 140-240 MW. The successful developer will sign a 20-year energy conversion agreement (ECA) with Aramco, which will award the four projects under one contract.

Three international companies are advising Aramco on the project: Germany's Fichtneris the technical adviser, BNP Paribasis the financial adviser and White & Caseis the legal adviser.
