Two chase latest IWPP

Two bids were received by the 11 July deadline for the state's latest proposed independent water and power project (IWPP). Ras Laffan Power Company, in which AES Oasisis the majority shareholder, has tabled one of the bids, with financial backing from BNP Paribas. The other submission has come from Qatar Electricity & Water Companywith the UK's International Power. HSBCis backing the bid.

The estimated $700 million-800 million project calls for the installation of 750 MW and 50 million gallons a day of new capacity. Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa), which is overseeing the project, is aiming to make a selection by September (MEED 2:7:04). Germany's Fichtner is acting as technical consultant on the project; Denton Wilde Sapteis the legal adviser (MEED 9:4:04).
