UAE appoints nuclear envoy to international energy agency

07 July 2008
The UAE has nominated its first ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as part of the country’s plans to launch a civilian nuclear power programme.

Hamad al-Kaabi, who in April was selected to lead the UAE's nuclear energy plans, will now also take on the role of IAEA ambassador.

The UAE plans to import enriched uranium for nuclear power plants and has pledged to work in close collaboration with the IAEA, the UN nuclear watchdog.

The UAE has already approached at least nine firms to provide programme management services for its nuclear power scheme (MEED 27:6:08).
