UAE population predicted to hit 7.6 million this year

25 January 2010

Locals will make up just 13.3 per cent of people living in the emirates

The UAE’s population will grow to 7. 6 million by the end of 2010, according to the latest projections from the country’s National Human Resources Development & Employment Authority (Tanmia).

Tanmia says that by the end of the year the population will have increased by 1.9 million, or 34 per cent, from the 5.6 million that were living in the emirates in 2006. It also says that the country’s population is currently doubling every 8.7 years, compared to the 55 years it takes for the world population to double.

The report also warns of a growing imbalance between the number of locals and expatriates. The percentage of UAE nationals in the overall population dropped from 24.4 per cent to 15.4 per cent between 1995 and 2006, and it is expected to fall to 13.3 per cent this year.
