Boeing is due to deliver two more in 2012

The US’ Boeing has delivered a third C-17 Globemaster III airlifter to the UAE Air Force and Air Defence.

“We selected the C-17 Globemaster III for the versatility and reliability the aircraft brings to our mission,” says UAE Air Force and Air Defence Officer, Humaid al-Mansoori.

“The first two C-17s delivered to the UAE Air Force and Air Defence have been flying around the world in support of humanitarian missions. The fleet’s newest airlifter is a welcome addition so that we can continue to be ready for any contingency, anywhere and any time.”

The UAE took delivery of the first C-17 in May 2011. Boeing is scheduled to deliver a fourth C-17 aircraft to the UAE later this year and a further two in 2012.

The C-17 can transport large payloads across vast ranges without refueling. It can also operate in very hot and cold climates.

In February, the UAE Armed Forces signed $1.8bn worth of defence deals during the International Defence Exhibition in Abu Dhabi (MEED 22:2:11).
