Umm Bab cement expansion goes for bid

The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) tender has been issued for bid on the estimated $125 million expansion of the Umm Bab cement plant. The bid closing date has been set for 10 November, although a one-month extension is expected. The Qatar National Cement Company (QNCC)project calls for the addition of a 1 million-tonne-a-year (t/y) line, which will take cement capacity up to about 2.4 million t/y (MEED 19:9:03).

About eight companies have been invited to bid for the EPC package. They include FCBof France, the main contractor for QNCC's last expansion, Germany's Polysius, Denmark's FL Smidthand Ishikawajima Harima Heavy Industries (IHI), Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI)and Kobe Steel, all of Japan.

QNCC is expected to award the 24-27-month contract in the first quarter of 2004. The project consultant is Basse Sambre Eriof Belgium.
