UN Security Council to discuss new resolution on Thursday

27 February 2003
The UN Security Council is to meet behind closed doors on 27 February to discuss a draft resolution sponsored by the US, the UK and Spain which is seen as clearing the ground for an attack on Iraq. The meeting is expected to define the initial reaction to the resolution among its 15 members which at present is believed to have a majority who will oppose or abstain in any vote about it.

France, Germany and Russia have submitted a memorandum to the council which says the case for war is not yet made and that weapons inspectors should be given more time. Most of the other members are yet to adopt a clear position towards the resolution.
