The United Nations General Assembly rights committee has condemned civil rights abuses by the Syrian government following a bitter debate between the UN envoys of Saudi Arabia and Syria.

The committee voted overwhelmingly for a Saudi-drafted resolution which expressed “outrage” at ‘the continued widespread and systematic gross violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms and all violations of international humanitarian law by the Syrian authorities and the government-affiliated shabbiha militias.

Syria’s UN Ambassador Bashar Ja’afari accused Saudi Arabia of “fanning the flames” of the conflict in the country. Syria has long blamed Saudi Arabia and Qatar of arming the rebels.
