US diplomats allowed to return

23 February 2004
The US embassy in Riyadh has authorised non-essential diplomats and families to return to the kingdom. The move comes after Washington allowed some diplomats and their dependents the option of leaving on 17 December after more than 50 people were killed in Riyadh suicide bombings in 2003. Nine US citizens were among the dead.

'This move reflects the confidence that we have in the Saudi government's ability to protect people in residence in the kingdom,' an embassy spokesman said. However, the US State Department continues to warn other US citizens against visiting Saudi Arabia.
