BBC Radio reported at 3:10 pm GMT that US forces were about three miles south of Nasiriyah, a provincial capital and major town on the Euphrates river north-west of Basra.
BBC reporter Gavin Hewitt said that an armoured column had advanced up the Basra-Baghdad road and was advancing slowly towards the outskirts of the city. No resistance was reported.
