US: more sophisticated enemy in Iraq

03 October 2003
A senior US official in Iraq on 2 October warned that the coalition is now facing a more sophisticated enemy in the country. 'The enemy has evolved,' said US military commander in Iraq Ricardo Sanchez. 'It is a little bit more lethal, a little bit more complex and in some cases a little bit more tenacious.' Speaking at a press conference in the Iraqi capital, Sanchez warned that people 'should not be surprised if one of these days we wake up to find there has been a major terrorist attack'.

Sanchez's warning comes a day after the UK representative to the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) South, Hilary Synott said that British forces were to remain in the country for some time longer. Speaking during a visit to London, Synott said that UK forces should not leave the country until local infrastructure was made robust, which could take as long as a year (MEED 26:9:03).
