A US C-17 military cargo aircraft was hit by a surface-to-air missile on 10 December as it took off from Baghdad international airport. 'A C-17 shortly after departure from the airport had a flight emergency -. They had an explosion in one of their engines,' said US military spokeswoman, Carrie Clear. 'The cause of the explosion is still being investigated.'

US express and logistics firm DHL announced on 24 November that it had suspended all flights to Iraq after an attack on one of its cargo planes taking off from Baghdad airport. US military officials believe that the DHL plane was hit by one or two surface-to-air missiles. DHL announced in late May that it was to become the first logistics company to enter Iraq following the lifting of sanctions (MEED 25:11:03).
