US armed forces are preparing to deal with tens of thousands of Iraqi soldiers expected to surrender or be captured in any attack in Iraq, Reuters reported from Kuwait on 13 March. In the 1991 war for Kuwait, more than 60,000 Iraqis were taken prisoner.

Reuters reported that the First Marine Expeditionary Force is preparing to receive up to 20,000 prisoners who may be taken by marines alone in the first few days of a conflict.
