US soldiers killed in gun battle

17 October 2003
At least two Iraqi policemen and three US soldiers were killed on 17 October in a gun battle in Karbala. According to reports, the gunfight took place when about 20 men guarding the offices of a local Shia cleric ignored US troops' requests to obey the night-time curfew. The latest deaths bring to 100 the number of US military personnel killed in Iraq since President Bush announced the end of major combat operations on 1 May.

In a separate incident, UK soldiers shot and killed an Iraqi civilian on 16 October in the southern city of Basra, announced the UK Ministry of Defence. The incident took place when two army vehicles came under fire.

In another incident early on 16 October, four Jordanians were killed in Iraq when their car was fired on by US soldiers guarding a checkpoint. 'The four Jordanians were killed when the driver passed a checkpoint, possibly ignoring warnings to stop in poor visibility,' said an unnamed US official.
