President Bush is to request a $10,000 million aid package for Israel from Congress as part of his war budget, to help deal with severe economic recession. Direct military aid will account for $1,000 million and the remainder will come in the form of loan guarantees. National Security Adviser Condolezza Rice pledged the assistance to Israeli Foreign Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on 19 March. Israel had initially appealed for $4,000 million in military aid and $8,000 million in loan guarantees. The package comes on top of the $2,100 million in military financing and $800 million in economic support Israel will already receive from the US in 2003.
