US vows to improve Iraq security

05 November 2003
US deputy defence secretary Paul Wolfowitz said on 4 November that the US would do everything in its power to improve security in Iraq. 'Foreign terrorists are trying to create conditions of fear,' Wolfowitz said in Washington. 'Freedom is what terrorists fear most.' He added that the media coverage on the Iraq situation had blurred the real picture. 'It doesn't take very many people to mount a terrorist attack. It can effectively obscure the larger picture,' he said (MEED 27:10:03).

Wolfowtiz's comments came after a day of attacks against coalition troops in the country. Mortar rounds were fired at a US compound in Baghdad, wounding at least four people inside the heavily guarded area. Another US soldier was killed when a roadside bomb destroyed the vehicle in which he was travelling. The number of UK servicemen killed in the conflict rose to 52 with the announcement from the UK Ministry of Defence that a Royal Marine was killed on 31 October while on operation in northern Iraq.
