Laurence Foley, an executive with the US Agency for International Development (USAID) programme, was shot dead outside his home in Amman on 28 October. The incident immediately sparked fears of further attacks being made on US targets in the region, as tension rises over the Iraq question.
Foley, 60, had worked with USAID for 14 years in Washington, Bolivia, Peru, Zimbabwe and, since 2000, Jordan. The USAID programme in Jordan is one of the agency's largest. Funding levels have averaged over $150 million a year since 1997. The agency has focused its efforts on water resources, economic reform and health.
The US embassy has reiterated its 13 October warning to American citizens in Jordan to exercise extreme vigilance.
