UWEC gets water licence

19 December 2003
The local Union Water & Electricity Company (UWEC)has received a licence from Abu Dhabi's Regulation & Supervision Bureau to transport, deliver and store bulk water in Abu Dhabi. The licence clears the way for UWEC to supply up to 90 million gallons a day (g/d) of water from its power and desalination complex in Fujairah.

UWEC will supply the water to Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Company (ADWEC), the procurement arm of the Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA), which will then supply it to the emirate's two distribution companies.

The water will be supplied from the first phase of the Qidfa power and desalination complex, which has capacity of 656 MW and 100 million g/d. The remaining 10 million g/d will be delivered to the northern emirates. A second-phase of expansion is planned, which will add some 1,000 MW and 100 million g/d of new capacity.
