Wall construction to stop, says official

19 February 2004
Saudi Arabia has agreed to stop the construction of a barrier on its border with Yemen, an official has said. In return, Sanaa has reportedly agreed to joint patrols in an attempt to curb cross-border smuggling and infiltration. The news comes after two-day talks in Riyadh between Yemeni President Saleh and Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz (MEED 17:2:04).

'Saudi Arabia's main concern is to control its borders with neighbouring countries, including Yemen, by whatever means possible,' the official said. 'If the joint security measures agreed with Yemen can ensure border security, then there is no need for sandbags.'
