Kuwait-based airline restarted operations last year after shuttering in 2011

Kuwait-based Wataniya Airways has placed a firm order for 25 new Airbus A320 aircraft, it was announced at the Farnborough Airshow in the UK.

The order follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the carrier, which restarted operations in July last year, and the French aircraft manufacturer during the Dubai Airshow held last year.

The deal is valued at an estimated $2.68bn.

The carrier has been operating a fleet of four A320 aircraft since it restarted operations last year.

According to the carrier’s website, the four aircraft cater to 19 destinations including Istanbul (Turkey), Kathmandu (Nepal), Athens (Greece), Baku (Azerbaijan), Amman (Jordan), Sohag, Alexandria and Assiut (all Egypt), Beirut (Lebanon) and Mashhad (Iran).

Wataniya Airways ceased operations in March 2011, only two years after it began operations, due to financial issues and regional instability.
