Werner van Straaten

Position: Director of civil infrastructure, UAE, Aecom

Biography: Werner van Straaten was appointed UAE director of civil infrastructure at the US’ Aecom in 2012, having been vice-president and operations director for the consultancy’s major projects group since 2009.

In his current role, he is responsible for strategy and business growth. His division provides design support services to other Aecom offices in the Middle East. Aecom, in joint venture with the US’ Parsons Brinckerhoff and Germany’s DB International, was appointed by Abu Dhabi to conduct the study for the Etihad Rail project.

Together with the US’ Parsons International, it was also awarded the project management consultancy contract for the first phase of the federal railway and the design of the other two phases. Before joining Aecom, Van Straaten was operations director for projects in Africa at the UK’s Arup, and technical director at a subsidiary of South Africa’s Eskom in Mali.
