Position: Director general, Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR)

Biography: William Travers is the director general for FANR, which is responsible for nuclear development in the UAE. Travers began working on establishing a nuclear regulatory body for the UAE in 2008.

He started his professional career at the US’ Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) as a radiological physicist, and then went on to hold several positions within the organisation. From 1998 to 2004, Travers served as the NRC’s executive director for operations. During this period, he was the NRC representative on the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA’s) commission for safety standards.

Before moving to Abu Dhabi, Travers was special assistant to the IAEA deputy director general for nuclear safety and security in Austria. In March, Enec applied to FANR for a licence to build a third and fourth nuclear reactor at Baraka in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi.
