France's Sidem has started work on an estimated AED 265 million ($72 million) engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to build two desalination plants with total capacity of 15 million gallons a day (g/d) in the northern emirates. The client is the Federal Electricity & Water Authority (FEWA).

Under the contract, Sidem will install 10 million g/d of new capacity at the Al-Nakheel power plant in Ras al-Khaimah and 5 million g/d at the Ajman power plant. Both plants will use multi-effect distillation (MED) technology and will take about two years to be commissioned.

FEWA has recently awarded a second desalination contract to Italy's Fisia Italimpianti. Under theAED 36.7 million ($10 million) contract, the Italian company will build a 3 million-g/d reverse osmosis (RO) plant in Ras al-Khaimah (MEED 9:5:03; 7:2:03).
