The New Doha International Airport (NDIA) Steering Committee has issued notices to proceed for a further $300 million of construction work on its grassroots airport project. The joint venture (JV) of the local Construction Development Company (CDC) and Japan's Takenaka Corporation has been awarded the QR 837 million ($246 million) contract to build the Emiri terminal, while Athens-based Consolidated Contractors International Company (CCC) has been selected for the QR 155 million ($46 million) contract to build the air traffic control (ATC) building (MEED 12:5:06).
The CDC/Takenaka JV was low bidder for the design and build terminal contract after fresh prices were submitted in early May. The other main competitor for the 22-month contract was Cyprus-based Joannou & Paraskevaides (J&P Overseas).CCC's 21-month contract covers the design and build of the ATC building and support facilities. It does not include the equipment, which was removed from the original scope of works and is now being tendered separately by the client. The local Gulf Housing & Construction has also recently started work on the airline engineering offices and airline operations facilities package. The QR 170 million ($50 million) contract calls for the construction of two large two-storey buildings. The engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contractor on the NDIA project is US-based Bechtel.
