Contractor was awarded $100m-plus deal in early May
Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company (Takreer) has selected Germany’s Ed Zueblin to build all of the major non-process buildings and roads at its $10bn Ruwais refinery expansion project.
Zueblin was sent a letter of intent for the $100m-plus engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract in early May and has already started mobilising staff to work on the job, sources close to the scheme tell MEED.
The deal covers the construction of 18 buildings to house utilities, substations, and a district cooling tower along with warehouses and health and safety offices over 25,000-30,000 square metres. Zueblin will also build all of the roads and walkways for the project. Zueblin’s contract includes detailed engineering designs for the buildings.
The deals are part of Takreer’s plans to expand the production capacity of the Ruwais refining complex from 417,000 barrels a day (b/d) to 817,000 b/d. The expansion is scheduled for completion in 2013 and the work involved in the project is worth more than $10bn in total.
The state oil refiner awarded the main construction deals on the project in November 2009 with South Korean firms dominating the bidding (MEED 22:11:09).
South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering Company submitted the lowest bid, of $471m, for another Takreer project to build a new lubricants plant at Ruwais on 16 May (MEED 19:5:10).
