China's leading firms are already making significant strides in foundational technologies essential for the upcoming industrial revolution

China's rapid ascent as a technological powerhouse has positioned it to become a global leader in innovation, according to a recently published report by GlobalData’s Thematic Intelligence.

This transformation is largely fuelled by a drive for self-reliance, catalysed by escalating US tariffs and sanctions that have prompted China to forge a Beijing-centred economic security zone reliant on its own technological advancements.

The GlobalData report underscores a pivotal shift in the global economic landscape, where data is set to replace oil as the key resource of the 21st century. With China poised to dominate the paradigm, its leading firms are already making significant strides in foundational technologies essential for the upcoming industrial revolution. In the semiconductor arena, companies like Huawei and SMIC are at the forefront, while the telecommunications sector is spearheaded by major players such as China Mobile and ZTE, driving the rollout of 5G networks.

China's technological prowess spans various sectors, including robotics, electric vehicles, and artificial intelligence, with industry leaders such as DJI, BYD, and Alibaba at the forefront.

The advancements are not merely economic; they are integral to national security and global influence. As the US-China trade war intensifies, the decoupling of the two economies is expected to deepen, resulting in fragmented global supply chains and competing technological standards.

The report also raises concerns about the U.S. semiconductor industry, which could face substantial losses due to stringent export controls, potentially jeopardising thousands of jobs. In response, China is doubling down on its commitment to self-sufficiency, phasing out foreign technology in favour of domestic alternatives.
