28 July 2003
The Italian arm of Europe's ABBon 22 July was awarded a $90 million engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to enhance pipeline capacity in blocks 404b and 403 in the Berkine basin. The client is state energy company Sonatrach, which is also operator of the blocks. ABB submitted a bid for the contract in partnership with the local Societe Algerienne de Realisation des Projets Industriels (SARPI), a joint venture of ABB Italy and Sonatrach.

The surface facilities will increase efficiency in the existing pipeline infrastructure. Construction is scheduled to take 28 months, though first oil is expected to come on stream four months prior to project completion.

The ABB consortium was one of six internationally-led groups to be shortlisted for the contract. The other bidders were Canada's SNC Lavalin, Kellogg Brown & Rootof the US, Japan's JGC Corporation, Initec of Spain and France's Sofregaz.
