Position: Vice-chairman, DIFC
Biography: Abdulaziz al-Ghurair was appointed vice-chairman of the DIFC higher board of governors in August 2011, when Sheikh Mohammed announced a reshuffle. In 1990, Al-Ghurair became chief executive officer (CEO) of Mashreq bank, which was founded by his father, Abdullah al-Ghurair, in 1967.
He is also chairman of Al-Ghurair, the family-owned conglomerate with interests in construction, commodities, food, oil and gas, retail and education. He joined Mashreq in 1977, working his way up to take control of the bank’s international operations in 1988.
He was appointed executive director in 1989, before becoming CEO the following year. Al-Ghurair sits on the Dubai Economic Council, an advisory body set up to help the Dubai government make economic policy. He was previously speaker of UAE’s Federal National Council. Al-Ghurair has a degree from California Polytechnic State University in the US.
