Abu Dhabi appoints advisers for 350MW solar project

German firm will provide technical consultancy services

Abu Dhabi has appointed advisers for its planned 350MW independent solar power project (IPP).

Abu Dhabi Electricity & Water Company (Adwec) has appointed Germany’s Fichtner as the technical adviser for the scheme. MEED reported in January that Adwec was evaluating proposals for the technical consultancy role.

According to sources in Abu Dhabi’s power sector, US-based Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld has been appointed as legal adviser and the UK’s Alderbrook Finance will provide financial advisory services.

For the financial advisory position, Alderbrook saw off competition from some of the major international firms, including EY, PwC, Deloitte and KPMG.

The planned 350MW IPP will use photovoltaic (PV) solar technology. According to sources within the emirate’s power sector, the project owner is likely to split the work into two or more phases. The plant will be located near the town of Sweihan in the eastern region of Abu Dhabi.

The project will reassert the emirate’s position as a major regional player in the renewable energy market, since it started to trail others since it commissioned Shams 1 in March 2013, the region’s first utility-scale solar energy plant.
