New pipelines will link Mussafah with Khalifa Port

Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company (Takreer) has invited companies to express interest in bidding on the third phase of its Inter-Refinery Pipelines development, according to sources familiar with the contract.

The project includes building oil product pipelines linking Abu Dhabi city’s industrial hub Mussafah with Khalifa Port, located on the Gulf coast between the cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Several companies have been invited to submit prequalification documents for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) work in June. They are thought to include:

  • Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC; Athens-based)
  • National Petroleum Construction Company (local)
  • China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corporation (CPECC; China)
  • Samsung Engineering (South Korea)
  • GS Engineering & Construction (South Korea)
  • Saipem (Italy)

The front-end engineering and design (feed) study for the scheme was awarded to UK-based Amec Foster Wheeler.

The scope of works includes: liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) transport from Mussafah to Khalifa Port; a multi-product terminal at Khalifa Port; a pipe corridor at Khalifa Port; and associated facilities.

The second phase of the Inter-Refinery Pipelines development included pipelines linking the Asab oil field with the Ruwais refinery and nearby airport for the supply of jet fuel, and was completed in 2014. GS Engineering & Construction was awarded a $623m EPC package on the project, with South Korea’s Daewoo Engineering & Construction picking up a $271m deal.

The initial Inter-Refinery Pipelines scheme was completed in 2007 and linked Ruwais with the refinery in Abu Dhabi city.
