Shuweihat S2 project in Abu Dhabi has a capacity of 1,510MW of electricity and 100 million gallons a day of water
Shuweihat S2 independent water and power project (IWPP) has commenced operations in Abu Dhabi. The IWPP has a capacity of 1,510MW of electricity and 100 million gallons a day (g/d) of water.
Shuweihat S2 IWPP is owned by UK/French company IPR-GDF Suez (20 per cent), Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (54 per cent), Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (Adwea) (6 per cent), Japan’s Marubeni Corporation (10 per cent) and Japan’s Osaka Gas (10 per cent). The developers signed financing agreements for the project in 2009 (MEED 16:10:9).
The power and water is being supplied to Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Company (Adwec) under a 25-year purchase agreement.
Construction of the plant commenced in December 2008. It is being developed by a consortium consisting of Germany’s Siemens and South Korean firms Samsung C&T and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction.
